WinXP Upgrade: Licensing question
I have five machines all running WinXP pro and each bought about 18 months apart. The oldest, a Pent I 233MHz, is dog slow. The next, a Pent II 400 MHz is slow I think I remember reading that you can't update a XP home install to XP pro later (could be an issue...) Good Luck. On Thu, 19 Sep 2002 16:40:56 -0700,

The "clean install" to WinXP Pro went OK. WinXP had drivers for everything, including the Montego II audio card, the P990 monitor, the 3Com/USR ISA modem, Nowing what I've seen so far of WinXP, if you don't *need* WinXP for some reason, I don't think it's worth the hassle and expense to upgrade from Win98.

Upgrading XP Home Edition to XP Professional
I have a WIN2003 Domain Controller ( forest and domain functionality at WIN2003 ) and a WIN2003 Member Server and a WINXP Pro SP1a system. Actually, under 2K03 you can't even install the patch as the OS tells you that it isn't needed. As for the XP client, according to MS, you only need it in pre SP 2 clients.

I have 2 systems in my house, one with Win2k Pro, one with WinXP Home. One is a Dell laptop with the XP, and the other is a regular desktop system. Or maybe I do, but I sure can't find it. How the heck can I use this new copy of XP Professional that I just bought to upgrade either of these systems?

I didnt get an XP Home CD, only a backup/recovery disk, and then obviously the XP Pro upgrade. If I can't do this I'll be livid - I've read that you need original So am I now stuck between a rock & a hard place with this MS OS?? Or is there a way that I can do this - ie. get a 'clean' installation of WinXP Pro?

Gentlemen!
You can upgrade to the retail WinXP Pro from Win98, WinMe, WinNT 4.0, Win2K Pro, WinXP Home RC1, RC2, and Retail, and WinXP Pro RC1 and RC2. MSDN WinXP Pro can't Update!
This new PF86 folder can also be a problem for users upgrading from 32-bit to 64-bit Windows. The operating system itself cannot be "upgraded". Hardware and drivers differences are so great that we can't install any 64-bit OS while booted into a 32-bit OS - and vice versa. So we can't just upgrade from WinXP Pro

NTFS and FAT32 again!
I've just come across another post with pretty much that same problem: Several Win98 installations upgraded to WinXP Home that will not subsequently upgrade to WinXP Pro. I can only surmise, at this point, that something about this particular combination "confuses" the WinXP Pro upgrade CD. I don't think the file

Can't upgrade from W2k...WHY...?????????????????
<tries to continue, but can't for laughing derisively> For example, Windows 95 is crap, so is Win98 and WinMe. In fact all the Win9x software is very unreliable. WinXP Pro "upgrade" vs. full edition
I would suspect that an off-the-shelf copy of WinXP Pro would run just as well on your system as your computer company's "Home edition upgrade" coupon offer product. I mean, most systems OEMs (Dell, Compaq, Micron, Gateway, etc.) are as stingy as Scrooge when it comes to the little things, so I can't see them
